VOLCANIC REGIONS MTB TOUR

The main goal of this tour is to get to know the volcanic region of La Garrotxa through different paths and trails. This set of routes will let you explore the most characteristic  spots in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone such as volcanos, lava flows, the beech forest of Jordà (La Fageda d’en Jordà)and the most important towns around. The landscape is dominated by volcanic cones – about 40 in the region – of which the volcanoes of Santa Margarida and Croscat are the most outstanding.

1rst DAY: Arrival at Olot

Arrival at Olot from Barcelona or Girona airport. Cultural visit through the town where you’ll find important monuments such as the church of Saint Steve, the sanctuary of the Virgin of Tura, the cloister of Carme, not to mention the houses built in a modernist style in the city. We also recommend visiting the Volcano Museum and hiking up the crater of the volcano Montsacopa, which allows you to have an excellent view over the city.

2nd DAY: Old fountains

This is a circular trip to get to know the large amount of old fountains that the city has. These fountains were formerlyused as a source of energy for locals, so they’re very representative of life in those days. Nowadays they are a source of inspiration for many painters.

3rd DAY: Fageda d’en Jordà and volcanoes

This is a circular and guided trip through La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. Your accomodation will be both the starting and ending point. Afetr a few kilometers, we’ll go to an exceptional beech forest called La Fageda d’en Jordà. Afterwards, we’ll discover the Croscat  and Santa Margarida volcanoes, the latter holds a romanic chapel in the center of the crater that gives its name to the volcano. Further on, we’ll find twovolcanoes more: Sant Miquel and Puigjordà. We suggest that you visit the village of Santa Pau, a medieval town located in the Volcanic Zone.

4th DAY: The lava stream of Castellfollit de la Roca and Sant Joan les Fonts

The fourth day a small country lanes will allow you to visit two towns, famous for their lava flows. The tour starts at your accomodation and, after crossing througt the city of Olot we’ll reach a path that takes us directly to Sant Joan les Fonts. Once in this town, we suggest that you visit the monastery, the medieval bridge and the old mill called Molí Fondo, from where you’ll be able to observe the multiple lava flows. We’ll the cycle for another 3,5km until we reach Castellfollit de la Roca, a town well-known for its location, on top of a basaltic cliff.

5th DAY: Vall d’en Bas

The last day of your trip will lead you around some of the most representative villages in this beautiful area of la Garrotxa. The municipality of Vall d’en Bas is top rated by its geography and landscape. Ridges and hill ranges surround the fields and forests to reach the plain of Bas. Some of those towns are Hostalets d’en Bas, one of the most picturesque hearts of the region, Joanetes, little town located by the foot of the mount Puigsacalm and Mallol  with lots of medieval history.

6th DAY: Return

Time to go back. If you haven’t booked a private transport, you have the option to take a public bus which will take you to Girona. From there you can take a bus either towards Barcelona or towards Girona Airport.
